Spotlight on our Activities: Meet Darby Cartun, Reflections on Art
Darby Cartun calls her weekly program "Reflections on Art" because, she says, "Everyone has an opinion about the paintings we look at, even if they've never seen the artist's work before. The idea behind the program is to get people to talk about art, to start seeing things in new ways."
"Reflections on Art," started this past Sept., is a success in many ways. Usually about 25 people attend the half-hour sessions, and the talk is lively and the audience attentive.
Ms. Cartun, a trained mentor representing the program from The University of the South Theological School, Education for the Ministry, says she created the art program because "I wanted to give a gift to the elderly, but I feel I've received more than I've given."
"We've all been given gifts, talents and abilities." she says, "and art is a wonderful way to share ideas and appreciate how many different kinds of talents there are."
Ms. Cartun uses 16" x 20" art boards which reproduce the paintings of artists from Rembrandt to Picasso. She chooses themes for each sessions, works by the German Expressionists or French Impressionists, paintings of animals, landscapes and seascapes. She gives some background about the artist and then gives residents the opportunity to talk about what they see. "I don't like it at all!" someone said about Picasso, for instance, yet someone else Sept. find the same painting interesting.
"I'm just the guide," says Ms. Cartun. "It's wonderful how spontaneous and friendly the group has become. We're all on a first name basis, and the artwork often brings back memories to be shared. It's turned out to be lots of fun."
"I haven't been trained to work with the elderly," Ms. Cartun explains. "My experience has been mostly with children, but I love being with older people, I knew I was reaching them when after we talked about paintings of animals, one resident invited me to her apartment to see photographs of her beloved cat."
Sessions of "Reflections on Art" are continuing, Monday afternoons, from 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 and all residents are invited to come and sample this truly enjoyable program.
